Full-grain leather is cut from the top layer of the hide and keeps its natural grain, including small marks and texture, rather than having it sanded away. Because the tight outer fibres of the hide are left intact, it is the most durable and breathable type of leather used in upholstery, and it develops a rich patina over years of use. It costs more than corrected-grain leather because hides with fewer natural marks are needed to use the surface as it is.
On a sofa, full-grain leather softens and takes on a slightly lived in look with time, which many people see as part of its appeal rather than a flaw. It is often finished with just a light protective coating, or left aniline, so it can mark or darken with body oils and sunlight.
