A slipcover is a fabric cover made to fit over a sofa's existing upholstery, either loosely draped or cut and sewn to match the sofa's exact shape. It can be used to protect the upholstery underneath from everyday wear, to update a sofa's look without reupholstering it, or to refresh a sofa that has faded or marked over time.
A well fitted slipcover, cut to the specific sofa's dimensions, looks far closer to permanent upholstery than a generic stretch cover, which tends to pull and bunch at the arms and seat. Many slipcovers are machine washable, making them a practical option alongside a performance fabric for a household with children or pets. Our living room ideas page covers using a slipcover as part of a styling refresh.
