Nubuck is made from top-grain leather that has been sanded or buffed on its outer, grain side, which raises a short, soft nap similar to suede but from a thicker, more durable hide. The result feels velvety to the touch and has a slightly matte, suede-like appearance.
Because the nap traps dirt and marks easily and water can leave visible spots, nubuck needs more careful cleaning than smooth leather, usually with a soft brush and a specialist protector spray. Unlike suede, which is made from the thinner underside of the hide, nubuck's thicker structure gives it better durability on a sofa.
