Suede is made from the inner, flesh side of an animal hide, which is naturally softer and more fibrous than the outer grain side used for most leather. Buffing this surface raises a fine, soft nap, giving suede its familiar velvety texture and matte look.
Because the hide is thinner and more porous than nubuck or full-grain leather, suede on a sofa marks easily from water, oils and everyday contact, and needs regular brushing plus a protective spray to stay looking its best.
